Mike Winkelmann, the digital creator recognized as Beeple, has positioned himself at the forefront — quite literally — with his newest viral exhibit at Art Basel Miami Beach, and there remains time to view it until Sunday.
His “Regular Animals” initiative showcases $100,000 robotic dogs equipped with hyper-realistic heads that resemble Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, alongside art icons Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. The robot dogs navigate a plexiglass enclosure, capturing photos via chest-mounted cameras that are processed by AI and then released, as reported by the WSJ. Out of the prints generated, 256 feature QR codes that provide collectors with a free NFT, distributed in bags marked “Excrement Sample.”
Beeple also made himself part of this select group, a decision the Charleston-based artist referred to as “ballsy.” His self-portrait dog sold first, even catching Beeple himself off guard, he remarked to the Journal.
This project signifies at least the second occasion Winkelmann has emerged as the pivotal figure in the art scene. Four years prior, his digital collage fetched $69 million at Christie’s, contributing to an NFT surge that would peak a year later before largely collapsing.
