Sandhya Devanathan, the vice president for Meta in India and Southeast Asia, is departing from the social network to take on a new role at OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, as reported by TechCrunch.<\/p>\n

Devanathan will be situated in Singapore and will report to Kiran Mani, who is the managing director for OpenAI in the Asia-Pacific region. She will be responsible for overseeing consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory interactions, and operational activities throughout Southeast Asia and Australia, OpenAI stated.<\/p>\n

After over ten years with Meta, the executive is transitioning away from the company, which has faced increasing scrutiny regarding topics like online safety and content moderation. According to an individual familiar with the situation, Devanathan played a role in the company\u2019s decision-making processes in India.<\/p>\n

This appointment follows Prabhjeet Singh’s recent joining of OpenAI as the head for India. Singh previously worked with Uber for more than a decade, where he managed the business in India and South Asia.<\/p>\n

OpenAI has been broadening its footprint in the Asia Pacific, establishing offices in major cities such as Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney, and Delhi over the past two years.<\/p>\n

Post-Devanathan\u2019s exit, Arun Srinivas, who serves as Meta\u2019s managing director in India, will report directly to Benjamin Joe, vice president for Asia Pacific, as indicated by a source familiar with the developments to TechCrunch.<\/p>\n

Devanathan became a part of Meta in 2016, where she took on various leadership positions, including leading the gaming sector in the Asia Pacific, before her promotion to vice president for India and Southeast Asia in June of the previous year.<\/p>\n

Recently, Meta has encountered increasing pressure from Indian officials. Earlier this month, the firm issued an apology after Instagram inadvertently limited a post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July. Following the incident, Indian authorities summoned Meta executives, including Joel Kaplan, their chief global affairs officer.<\/p>\n

The Indian government has also expressed worries regarding child sexual abuse material found on Meta\u2019s platforms. Last month, they requested clarification from the company after a BBC investigation uncovered Instagram advertisements purportedly providing access to such material.<\/p>\n

At that time, Meta remarked in a blog that it had removed the violating ads and accounts, pushing back against claims that it intentionally served such advertisements based on inappropriate interests.
