Snap introduces Snap OS 2.0 featuring a built-in browser, WebXR capability, and additional enhancements.

Snap has introduced the second iteration of its Snap OS, the software that powers its AR eyewear known as Snap Spectacles. This update features a fresh native browser, support for WebXR, and additional improvements. The launch follows the rollout of the fifth-generation Snap Spectacles for developers last year, with plans for a consumer version to be released in 2026.

This release is also timed just before Meta’s Connect conference taking place this week, where the company is anticipated to disclose its latest advancements in smart glasses, AI, and other tech.

According to Snap, Snap OS 2.0 brings a quicker and more user-friendly browser. The company has enhanced page loading times and power consumption to facilitate speedy navigation for users.

A revamped home screen now features widgets and bookmarks, along with an improved toolbar enabling users to enter or voice a website URL, browse their history, and refresh their pages. Moreover, users can resize windows just like they would on a laptop.

Snap indicates that the updated browser supports WebXR, enabling users to engage with augmented reality experiences directly from any WebXR-compatible site.

A new Spotlight Lens feature spatially overlays content onto the physical environment, allowing users to perform activities like washing dishes while watching videos from their favorite creators.

“The vertical orientation of our Spectacles’ field of view perfectly accommodates vertical video, enabling you to view content without needing to glance down at your phone,” Snap stated in a blog entry. “Easily fix Spotlight in one location, or have it track you as you move about.”

Moreover, Snap has introduced a Gallery Lens feature to help users revisit and share cherished memories, allowing them to view captures from their Spectacles in an interactive format. Users can scroll through a carousel of their videos and organize favorites for sharing with friends or posting to their Story.

There’s also a new Travel Mode that stabilizes AR visuals and tracking systems while users are on the go, whether in a vehicle or on an aircraft.
