Waymo has announced that its robotaxi service is back in operation after making “temporary adjustments” in San Francisco due to a power outage impacting approximately 7,000 PG&E customers in the area.
A screenshot shared on social media indicates that Waymo informed SF customers that service was “temporarily halted” and that “freeway routes are off-limits.”
When TechCrunch reached out to the Alphabet-owned firm for a statement, a representative commented, “We are implementing temporary modifications to our service while we assess local conditions. We understand riders depend on us, and we will resume regular operations at the earliest opportunity.”
After the initial publication of this piece, a Waymo spokesperson mentioned that the company “chose to suspend service for about one hour to evaluate the extent of the power outage impacting a significant portion of San Francisco and collaborate with local authorities.”
Power outages have previously disrupted Waymo service, such as when several Waymo vehicles became immobilized on city roads during a blackout in December, and during a similar event that stalled traffic amidst a Golden Gate Bridge fireworks display on the Fourth of July.
Consequently, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has advocated for stricter state regulations to “properly regulate how autonomous vehicles function during major incidents, whether planned or not.”
This article has been updated with further comments from Waymo confirming that service has resumed.
