Today, Anthropic unveiled plans for a “public benefit fund” aimed at providing the company with “enhanced flexibility and scale” to back initiatives that serve societal interests.
The company announced its intention to allocate 5% of its shares to this fund — set up as a fully-owned subsidiary — with an option to add another 2% for each 50% rise in Anthropic’s valuation. It also put forth some general ideas for potential uses of these funds, including “significant contributions to established nonprofits or direct aid to targeted groups.”
Additionally, there is the effect of AI on employment, for which Anthropic has already designated $200 million for research. However, the firm stated, “In light of the rapid advancements in AI, more assertive strategies may be required. The Fund will possess the adaptability to pursue such initiatives.”
This announcement from Anthropic occurs amid a backdrop of growing negative public perception of the AI sector, which CEO Dario Amodei has referred to as “essentially a crisis of trust.”
If you’re curious about who will determine which public benefits should be financed, Anthropic mentioned that it will provide more details regarding structure and governance in the upcoming months.
