Top Bone Conduction Headsets of 2026: Shokz, Suunto, Mojawa

Shokz continues to lead the bone conduction headphone sector, and the OpenSwim Pro is no different. It addresses the absence of Bluetooth streaming present in the first-generation OpenSwim, making it perfect for more than just swimming activities.

Whether you are streaming through Bluetooth or using the integrated 32-GB music player, the OpenSwim Pro offers outstanding open-ear sound. It features surprising bass and warmth, along with the clarity necessary for audiobooks and phone calls.

Adaptable to both standard and swimming EQ settings, the audio can be tailored for land or aquatic environments. With an IP68 waterproof rating, it effectively protects against sweat and water, while the silicone and titanium neckband guarantees comfort and a secure fit.

Boasting easy-to-reach physical controls, the battery lasts up to nine hours during Bluetooth streaming or six hours with the internal music player. Although it is not Shokz’s top-tier model, the OpenSwim Pro stands out in sound quality, design, and performance, securing a high rank on my list.

Top Ultralight Backpacking Comforters (2026): Zenbivy, REI

Top Ultralight Backpacking Comforters (2026): Zenbivy, REI

Less is indeed less, and don’t allow anyone to sway your opinion. This notion holds especially true when you’re packing everything necessary for a week’s survival on your back, leading us to the backpacking quilt: It’s a sleeping bag, but in a reduced form. In many situations, a backpacking quilt suffices, and I have found them preferable to sleeping bags for nearly all but the chillest outings.

These quilts are not comparable to the ones your grandmother gifted you. Backpacking quilts are crafted from nylon and filled with down similar to a conventional sleeping bag, but they sit atop you like a quilt, rather than cocooning you as a sleeping bag would. The advantages are twofold: A quilt is lighter, resulting in less weight to carry in your pack, and in suitable conditions, you may find your sleep improved as well.

WIRED Top Picks:

Why Is a Quilt Superior to a Sleeping Bag?

I have an entire article dedicated to exploring this question, but the brief answer is that it provides equal warmth while weighing less. The reasoning behind the first claim involves basic physics. When you recline in a sleeping bag, your body’s weight compresses much of the down fill to the sides. The down that remains beneath you is minimal and compacted (due to your weight), leaving you with inadequate insulation. So why carry weight that you aren’t benefiting from?

Quilts eliminate the bottom layer present in a sleeping bag, resting on you like the quilt on your bed back home. Typically, quilts weigh less than sleeping bags and compress into smaller sizes, making them popular among backpackers eager to lighten their loads and conserve space.

When Is a Sleeping Bag Preferable to a Quilt?

When temperatures drop significantly. The drawback of quilts lies in drafts (since they don’t encase you, they’re susceptible to cold air) and their absence of hoods. Drafts aren’t a significant issue in summer, the season during which most of us backpack, which is why I prefer quilts over sleeping bags most of the time. However, when I venture out to ski or snowshoe in the depths of winter, I opt for a subzero sleeping bag.

After years of experimentation, I’ve determined that nearly any quilt is suitable for summer use. For trips during transitional seasons where temperatures could fall below freezing, I still lean toward a quilt, but I favor a Zenbivy, which effectively blocks drafts compared to other quilts thanks to added sheets and side baffles. Whenever I anticipate temperatures dropping below 20°F, I equip myself with a sleeping bag.

If They Use Less Material, Why Are Quilts Pricier?

Quilts can sometimes—but not always—carry a higher price tag than a traditional lightweight sleeping bag. Why pay more for less? Usually, it boils down to down-fill power. Inexpensive sleeping bags commonly utilize 650 down fill, whereas most quilts fall in the range of 800 to 1,000 fill-power, which contributes to their increased cost. That being said, there are some excellent budget-friendly down quilts available, such as REI’s Magma Quilt.

The Best Quilt for Ultralight Summer Excursions

For summer trips, when I aim to travel as light as possible, Enlightened Equipment’s Revelation Quilt is my top recommendation. I own the 40°F model, which weighs a mere 19 ounces. Unlike many manufacturers, Enlightened Equipment does not use dual temperature ratings for comfort and lower/extreme limits. Instead, they select a midpoint number and advise on their website that most individuals “use a quilt 10 degrees warmer than the lowest expected temperatures.” My experiences with the Revelation align with this advice. I’ve found the Revelation keeps me warm down to approximately freezing, provided I’m wearing a base layer. If temperatures drop further, I’ll also wear a puffy jacket, but in summer, even in mountainous regions, this is seldom necessary.

The Revelation can lay completely flat on hotter nights, which is my typical usage. The foot box incorporates a 20-inch zipper and a drawstring that permit you to close it down, forming a snug (read warm) area at your feet when desired. Additionally, there are straps that create a loop and secure around your sleeping pad to hold the Revelation in position. The straps are separate, which is advantageous since I often don’t utilize them, though it poses a risk of misplacing them. They also differ slightly from other systems I’ve tried, as they wrap around your pad (instead of just beneath) and then you clip the Revelation to them. Since I dislike sleeping on the strap, I use these straps in an unconventional manner, placing them under my pad and ignoring the loop feature, and it works perfectly. On warm nights, I completely forgo the straps—after all, quilts are designed for flexibility.

The Revelation is

Travel Adapters: Your Inquiries Addressed

What Kind of Adapter Is Required?

Globally, there are 15 plug types in existence. Universal adapters typically accommodate all of these types.

  • Type A and Type B are prevalent in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Japan.
  • Type C is widely used in Europe, South America, and Asia.
  • Type E and Type F can be found across Europe, including in Germany, Russia, and France.
  • Type G is utilized in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and several other locales.
  • Type I is common in Australia, New Zealand, China, and Argentina.

Certain countries may not typically be served by universal adapters, such as India (Type D), Israel (Type H), and South Africa (Type M or N). It is advisable to acquire specific plug adapters for those regions. To prevent any unexpected issues upon arrival, verify the type you require before your trip.

If you’re going to just one location, a straightforward plug adapter that fits a singular plug type will suffice. For journeys involving multiple destinations or for frequent travelers, a universal travel adapter may offer greater flexibility. The universal adapters recommended here also feature several USB ports, allowing for the charging of multiple mobile devices from a single outlet.

24 Greatest Father's Day Presents for Dads (2026)

24 Greatest Father’s Day Presents for Dads (2026)

The sole Father’s Day present I recall my father getting was a dish of fried sardines made by my mother, his former wife. She understood how much he cherished a meal from his youth in an Italian neighborhood of a once-thriving steel city, so famous for its decline that Bruce Springsteen penned a song about it. We resided in a nearby town filled with Italian-American eateries, yet none offered the simple pleasures of canned fish. Since my father had basic cooking abilities and didn’t date women who could prepare meals, this was the only means for him to taste that familiar flavor again.

Getting a beloved dish from one’s past is a truly special Father’s Day present. If you can, this year, attempt to bring your dad back to a cherished recipe from his younger days. If not, I’ve compiled alternative gift ideas over the past few months, suitable for different types of dads and budgets. Aside from a few contributions from other fathers, these suggestions have all been personally tested and approved by me, with the hope they provide joy to your dad, just as those sardines did for mine.

The Top Father’s Day Gifts for Your Dad

For the Dad Who Plays With His Children:
– SpyraFour Electric Water Blaster: The SpyraFour water gun surpasses the Super Soakers of previous years and is well-regarded among German brands. Kids require their SpyraThree while dad enjoys the faster-refilling version, which holds water for about 20 shots, switches shooting modes, and displays remaining ammo on a digital screen. Its accuracy extends to 50 feet, suitable for ages 14 and older.
– Aerobie Pro Ring: Playing catch transitions enjoyment from child to adult over time. Aerobie’s flying disc is unmatched, serving not only as excellent equipment but also a means of sparking conversations during play.
– St. Pierre Tournament Bocce Set: Bocce is straightforward to grasp for all ages yet improves with practice. Among the bocce sets I own, this one from St. Pierre, suitable for competitive play, stands out as the most commendable.

For the Grill Dad:
– Mibrasa Hibachi MH 300 PLUS: Charcoal grills are becoming increasingly popular, but if cost is a concern, the Mibrasa hibachi grill made from heavy-gauge steel is superb. It’s portable, incredibly hot, and effectively turns drippings into flavorful smoke.
– Jacobsen Salt Co. Grilling Trio: Hand-harvested in Oregon, this trio enhances taste with a variety of herbs, including garlic and coriander seed in the steak blend.
– Oyster Tempo Pro: Despite its sleek aluminum exterior, the Tempo Pro cooler handles temperatures efficiently thanks to its vacuum-insulated design and includes a digital thermometer.

For the Beach Dad/Pool Dad:
– Beatbot Sora 30: A well-reviewed item, though I haven’t tested it, this robotic pool cleaner effectively removes debris from pool surfaces.
– Vero X Realtree Tide Tracker: A partnership with Realtree, this battery-free tide-tracking watch functions excellently outdoors, particularly near water.

For the Car Dad:
– Noco Boost+Air AX65: Combine the functions of a portable jump starter and tire inflator in this high-power unit. It quickly inflates tires and can jumpstart cars while also acting as a power bank for devices.
– BlueDriver Pro Next Gen OBD2 Scanner: An OBD2 scanner that provides extensive diagnostic features without any subscription fees. Connect to your car and phone via Bluetooth to read and clear codes.
– Decked Halfrack 32: Sturdy and robust, Decked’s Halfrack storage system is designed to withstand rough handling with secure locking, serving as a gateway to more comprehensive storage solutions.

For the Yard Dad:
– Lawnbright Custom Plan: No need for lengthy lawn care research or hours of work. Lawnbright’s custom plan caters to your lawn’s requirements, enhancing its look simply by spraying the formula delivered at optimal intervals. It’s ideal for any dad wishing for a vibrant lawn with minimal time commitment.

Necessary Equipment for a Crisis Kit—for Vehicles or Grab Bags

Necessary Equipment for a Crisis Kit—for Vehicles or Grab Bags

You never know when a sudden evacuation may be required. The current political landscape is erratic, and calamities don’t follow a timetable; stores frequently close during occurrences like wildfires or civil unrest. By the start of 2026, the Western United States could experience heightened wildfire threats due to unprecedentedly low snowpack levels, contributing to diminished water availability in spring and summer.

Authorities advise assembling an emergency kit ahead of time to guarantee your family’s security during hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, blizzards, wildfires, or man-made disasters.

Nevertheless, not every disaster is the same. Jonathan Sury from Columbia University’s National Center for Disaster Preparedness highlights two main scenarios for which families ought to prepare.

At times, a rapid exit with a go bag equipped with essentials like a three-day water reserve, purification tablets or water filters, a quality flashlight, and batteries is crucial, especially during an imminent wildfire. In other situations, such as snowstorms, it may be necessary to remain indoors without water or electricity, hence the need for power banks. Long-term planning is also important for regional wildfires, considering smoke and possible power outages.

“Consider the likelihood of power failures,” stated National Weather Service preparedness lead Charlie Woodrum. “Power may be out for multiple days or an entire week, and water could be limited.” He made these remarks in January, foreseeing a historic winter storm season throughout the United States, which could apply to disasters like earthquakes or fires.

Here’s a guide on how to prepare for a short-term crisis and what supplies to gather. This is not a manual for civil conflict or the end of the world but rather guidance for safely navigating natural disasters such as storms, floods, earthquakes, and wildfires, as well as failures in water or power systems.

Top Meta Glasses for 2026: Ray-Ban, Oakley, AR

Top Meta Glasses for 2026: Ray-Ban, Oakley, AR

Every time I talk about Meta’s AI-powered glasses, the question I’m frequently faced with is: Why do you want them? What’s the appeal of smart glasses that can play music or inaccurately identify plants with enthusiasm? As a fan of Ray-Ban Wayfarers and a user of Meta for WIRED, I prefer Meta glasses for the integrated experience they offer—sunglasses combined with workout headphones.

In 2025, Meta achieved sales of over 7 million units. These glasses have gained popularity at outdoor and sporting events for documenting experiences to share on social media. The partnership with EssilorLuxottica has rendered these glasses both stylish and accessible, prompting competition from companies like Google and Apple. After the unsuccessful launch of the Apple Vision Pro, Apple is pivoting towards more straightforward, fashionable options devoid of displays.

Nevertheless, it’s wise to proceed with caution when using these glasses given Meta’s dubious privacy policies. Even for those unbothered by facial recognition, the notion of being potentially recorded at any moment is quite disconcerting.

Social attitudes pose a notable challenge; donning these glasses might be perceived as defying social norms, leading to monikers like Zuckerberg’s “pervert glasses.” Yet, brands like Oakley and Ray-Ban still offer fantastic sunglasses that perform well, even if their AI capabilities aren’t utilized.

If you’re inclined to give them a shot, here’s what to look for. If not, check out our purchasing guides for the top smart glasses or workout headphones.

Meta has upgraded the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers, now offering entry-level glasses featuring various lens options, including clear, prescription, transition, or original sunglass lenses, in addition to assorted fits. The enhancements include a 12-MP camera and up to eight hours of battery life, although writer Boone Ashworth found it to last between five to six hours in practical use.

Smart Plug Manual (2026): When to Utilize and When to Steer Clear

Smart Plug Manual (2026): When to Utilize and When to Steer Clear

A smart plug is a multifunctional device that lets you manage electrical appliances via a connected outlet. By converting standard outlets to smart ones, a smart plug offers remote control of power to devices, allowing them to be activated or deactivated from any location, whether you’re at home or elsewhere. Utilize it for controlling appliances, scheduling lighting, or even automating a coffee maker or other simple gadgets.

For those looking to control basic devices that require only power, smart plugs serve as a superb choice. Among the leading options are TP-Link’s smart plugs, which have been particularly well-liked over time. The TP-Link Tapo Matter-Certified Smart Plug Mini (P125M) is a handy option, providing integration with your chosen smart home hub through the Matter protocol. For outdoor applications, the Cync Outdoor Smart Plug, equipped with dual outlets for $17, is built to endure outdoor conditions.

Wondering if a smart plug can improve your non-smart devices? From advice on their applications to compatibility evaluations, explore guidance on whether they meet your requirements. Updated April 2026: Now featuring the Ikea Grillplats Smart Plug, along with insights on energy monitoring.

What is a Smart Plug? Able to transform ‘dumb’ devices into smarter ones, a smart plug links devices (such as a lamp or coffee maker) to a home Wi-Fi network, enabling control via schedules, apps, or voice commands through a smart speaker. They allow you to set times for lamps, automate coffee makers, or control TVs from afar. However, power does not always mean the device is operational, as many remain inactive until manually switched on.

Best Device Pairings for Smart Plugs: Perfect for simple switch-operated devices, smart plugs shine with lamps and basic outdoor decorations. Scheduling features enable pre-set times for turning on or off, creating the appearance of being present at home or promoting timely sleep by automatically shutting down the TV.

Devices Unsuitable for Smart Plugs: They are not effective for devices that require activation through buttons or settings, like electric kettles or certain coffee machines. While they can cut power to TVs, they cannot automatically reactivate them after power is restored.

Other Capabilities: In addition to controlling devices, smart plugs track energy consumption, offering insights into usage patterns and assisting in managing electricity consumption. Advanced models like the Kasa EP25 are currently being evaluated for these features.

Our Top Smart Plug Picks: Through extensive testing, favored models include TP-Link’s Tapo Matter-Certified Smart Plug Mini for compact indoor use, and Cync’s Outdoor Smart Plug for outdoor environments, ensuring reliable performance across various conditions.

The Leading E-Readers of 2026: Kobo and Kindle

The Leading E-Readers of 2026: Kobo and Kindle

Our Preferred E-Readers Compared

Noteworthy Mentions

Below are several e-readers that we appreciate, although not as much as our top selections.

Boox Go 7 ($250) and Boox Color Go 7 ($290): Boox provides a variety of e-paper tablets, including the previously mentioned Palma 2. For those looking for a larger device with an Android operating system, the Go 7 and Go Color 7 are solid picks. They come with page-turning buttons and a user-friendly square design. The Go 7 is in black-and-white, while the Go Color 7 features a color display for an additional $40. If color isn’t a requirement, the black-and-white model is a more budget-friendly option.

Boox Palma 2 for $316: This compact device has enhanced features including fingerprint recognition, a faster processor, and an updated version of Android. Adrienne So from WIRED enjoys using it with the Kindle app, although she considers it to be quite expensive. It’s currently out of stock, and we’re awaiting news on whether it will be replenished or replaced by an updated version.

Kindle Colorsoft Signature for $280 and Kindle Colorsoft ($250): The Kindle Colorsoft Signature represents Amazon’s first Kindle with a color display, featuring an oxide backplane for improved contrast. The screen resolution is capped at 150 ppi for color images, as opposed to 300 ppi for black-and-white, resulting in a reading experience that is slightly less crisp than the latest Paperwhite. It lacks some common features such as page-turn buttons and stylus compatibility. Although the color adds depth, we suggest waiting for a price drop. The more affordable Kindle Colorsoft ($250) offers less storage and misses certain features like auto-adjusting light.

Kindle Scribe (2nd Gen, 2024) for $400: This second-generation Kindle Scribe functions both as an e-reader and digital notebook within the Kindle ecosystem, featuring a 10.2-inch (300 ppi) display and adjustable warm light. It includes a Premium Pen with a soft-tipped eraser. Amazon has revealed plans for future color variants.

Kindle Scribe (3rd Gen, 2025) for $500: The newest Kindle Scribe with a color option and design updates, featuring uniform bezels, launched in December 2025. It introduces new functionalities like AI summaries, which contribute to the higher price. The previous 2nd Gen model continues to be the preferred choice for those desiring a Kindle e-reader that also acts as a digital notebook.

Kindle Scribe Colorsoft for $630: This version adds color to the Kindle Scribe and was released late last year with new features at a premium price. It stands out as costly compared to other devices. If you are committed to Kindle and looking for a vibrant notebook and e-reader combo, this would be your option.

Nook GlowLight 4 Plus for $200: As the only waterproof Nook with the largest display at 7.8 inches and 32 GB of storage, it provides physical page-turn buttons and a headphone jack for audiobooks. It performs slower than Kindle, and while the library selection is broad, it doesn’t match the appeal of Kindle Unlimited. Acquiring a book from the library on a Nook can be tedious.

Nook 9-inch Lenovo Tablet for $150: Perfect for accessing color-rich content, this budget-friendly tablet comes with the Nook app pre-installed, but it compromises on E Ink screens. It’s not designed for heavy tasks but is suitable for focused reading with notifications disabled.
